Next-Level, Real-Time Analytics with MemSQL Cloud and Zoomdata

Real-time analytics without lifting a finger

Well, you may need to click a few buttons, but the complications of managing a data warehouse and extremely rigid BI tools to process real-time data are yesterday's problems. Optimization, automation, clear documentation, tutorials, and splendid support are all great but not as great as someone else doing the grunt work for you. This week our partner MemSQL, real-time data warehouse provider, launched its fully managed cloud service available on AWS and Azure, with GCP coming shortly. Read Full Press Release here

With the launch of MemSQL Cloud, companies have the tools they need to run a MemSQL data warehouse as a service, including the ability to scale horizontally instead of vertically on ever-larger machines. This aligns well with Zoomdata’s philosophy of self-service BI and our various cloud offerings that provide real-time analytics for business users.

Zoomdata brings the power of self-service BI to the 99 percent—the non-data geeks of the world who thirst for a simple, intuitive, and collaborative way to visually interact with data and solve their business problems. With our friends at MemSQL, we can now offer a way for business users to discover answers in real time from their streaming data.

Who benefits from real-time analytics?

In today’s world, any company that has customers. Really. B2B, B2C, C2C, and A through Z. Real-time analytics provides insights from customer data and improves business decision-making, which makes it beneficial for any company. And real-time analytics is no longer beneficial just for large-scale, high-tech companies.

Technologies like self-service BI from Zoomdata and MemSQL Cloud help ALL companies make data-driven decisions. In fact, when Dresner Advisory’s 2017 Wisdom of Crowds Business Intelligence Market Study reviewed year-over-year changes in business intelligence priorities, real-time analytics was near the top of the list with nearly a five-percent increase from last year. You can read the full report here.

TaxiStats simulates pickup and drop-off from real taxi ride data, streamed into MemSQL and visualized with Zoomdata. The business intelligence dashboard displays data as it is collected while simultaneously running SQL analytics.

What do you Need for Real-Time Analytics?

Proper tools

First, you need tools that are built for real-time analytics, not tools built for structured data that now claim to be “real-time-data optimized.” For example, with lots of resources, patience, and time I can convert ingredients in my kitchen into hair dyes (yes this blog is written by a female) but why? When the right tools are already available, just start with the right tools.

MemSQL combines real-time streaming, database, and data warehouse workloads for sub-second processing and reporting in a single, scalable, easy-to-manage database platform. MemSQL can ingest streams, process transactions, and perform analytics simultaneously in a single database, enabling businesses to analyze changing datasets. Zoomdata provides real-time visualization and streaming analytics based on self-service, interactive, subsecond response to ad-hoc queries of high-velocity data. It’s purpose-built for streaming data, with an architecture that can push real-time updates from the source.

Zoomdata supports all the workloads that MemSQL handles with stream processing technology. Zoomdata’s stream processing technology is a great fit for the real-time applications that typically use MemSQL. And since MemSQL supports full SQL syntax, Zoomdata and MemSQL make a powerful combination for real-time analytics. Companies can easily process tens of billions rows of data while performing predictive analytics that drive efficiency.

Plus scale-out infrastructure

This is where a cloud strategy becomes critical. (Note: if your data is not in the cloud, MemSQL and Zoomdata are available for on-prem deployment.) If your data is on-prem, but you’re considering a cloud or hybrid strategy for your streaming data, incorporating tools that operate on-prem and in the cloud is your best option.

MemSQL and Zoomdata are built to process 10B+ rows of data in seconds. Where would this type of data typically reside? The cloud. Why? It’s big, scalable, and secure. That’s what cloud brings to the “real-time analytics party,” which goes very well with what we already have: speed, insights, and services.

Adding a cloud strategy to our offering allows MemSQL and Zoomdata to deploy wherever customer data resides. Making our products available with easy one-click activations to a broad range of cloud platforms ensures that analytics go where the data is, which is critical for scalability.

Streaming 10-billion rows of data in seconds

Zoomdata incorporates a modern distributed architecture that harmonizes multiple large data sources into real-time interactive dashboards without moving data. MemSQL Cloud takes care of provisioning the hardware resources, managing them, keeping them up to date with operating system updates, security patches, and upgrades. Analyzing data in place eliminates the need for IT involvement and provides business users with a simple, intuitive, and collaborative way to visually interact with data to make data-driven decisions.

Crave something different?

MemSQL differs from most data warehouse technologies because it can ingest streams of real-time data while simultaneously analyzing live results in conjunction with historical data. This makes MemSQL an ideal database platform for accurate real-time analytics. It can perform very fast analytic queries on live data so it’s ideal for fast changing data analysis that also requires historical reconciliation for more accurate decision-making.

Zoomdata overcomes the challenges of analyzing massive data sets with streaming micro-queries and high-definition Data Sharpening. Instead of sending one big SQL statement, Zoomdata executes smaller micro-queries and sharpens visualizations as results stream from each source, showing instant results so users can act immediately.

Zoomdata and MemSQL on AWS

Zoomdata and MemSQL are available on major cloud providers such as AWS, GCP, Azure, and others. But let’s take AWS as an example and walk through some of the ways you can take real-time analytics to the next level.

MemSQL Cloud can ingest data from the AWS S3 object data storage platform, including JSON and geospatial formats. MemSQL’s security credentials, include encryption, network access control through Amazon VPC, and role-based access control.

Zoomdata’s Smart Connector for MemSQL with AWS has been optimized to take advantage of some of its key capabilities, including real-time updates, data sharpening, and custom query functionality. Zoomdata executes micro-queries directly on the data source that allows data to be visualized within a few seconds, even when the source contains billions of rows. For example, the Smart Connector for MemSQL allows Zoomdata to take advantage of MemSQL query performance and I/O efficiency by pushing queries directly to MemSQL. In Live Mode, Zoomdata can even update visualizations in near real time whenever fresh data becomes available in MemSQL. Users can pause, rewind, and fast forward in Live Mode with Zoomdata’s Data DVR.

MemSQL and Zoomdata are available through AWS Marketplace and offer free AWS credits and trials.
