Charts Interface Overview

Zoomdata's chart canvas provides a comprehensive suite of tools to help you conduct in-depth analysis, filter data points and discover needed insights quickly and efficiently. This article walks through the chart capabilities and tools available to you.

Figure 1 and the accompanying legend provides a breakdown of the tools and functionalities:

  1. Chart title: By default, displays the data source name created by the user. Click the title to edit.
  2. Left Rail Menu: provides access to the primary exploration tools available to the chart:
Tool Enables you to:
  • Undo the applied actions
  • Create filters to explore the dataset more deeply
  • Focus on the data of interest
  • Save created filters
  • Sort the data elements by metrics, perform calculations, and order them descending or ascending.
  • Set the number of data elements to be displayed.
  • Change the color range for the data elements
  • Toggle the color legend
  • Adjust values and step for the axes
  • Enable or disable the gridlines and the log scale
  • Add and configure the reference lines
  • Export the chart as an image (png or pdf) or export data (as xls or csv)

  • Edit the chart title and provide a description
  • Change the chart style on-the-fly
  • Select and apply specific time attribute
  • Enable or disable the time bar
  • Set default chart styles that will be available to users that have access to the data source
  • Available to admins and users with editing rights
  1. X- and Y- Axes Labels : enable you to change attributes or metrics
  2. Time Bar and Time Controls :
  • Filter your data by a time attribute
  • Zoom into specific period within the selected date range
  • Explore the dynamics of your data using the Play/Pause button
  1. Color Legend: By default, a color legend is enabled for all chart styles, but can be toggled off.
  2. Action Buttons :

- Save a chart or dashboard you have created.

- Share a chart or dashboard you have created via a link or iFrame code.
- Add a chart to the canvas (and build a dashboard). You can add different chart styles from either the same data source or from different sources.

  1. Search : this feature is available only for Elasticsearch , Solr , and Cloudera Search sources. You can enable this feature while creating or editing the data source on the General tab.

You can perform a full-text search on your data source using specific query syntax. For more information about the syntax, see Elasticsearch and Solr documentation.
When you have specified the search phrase, the Search results panel is displayed, consisting of two tabs:

  • Details - under this tab all the search results are listed. You can sort the search results by best match and most recent. After the search has been performed, new text search filter is created and applied to the chart. It is also listed on the Active filters pane.
  • Facets - on this tab, you can filter by facets. You can select the fields to be used as faceted filters on the Fields page while creating or editing the data source. Click Clear all to clear all the selected facets.

  1. Click Save .
  2. In the Save window, specify the following:
  • Name of your dashboard.
  • Description.
  • Select the Remember time position(s) checkbox to keep the same time when returning to the dashboard (as opposed to starting at the most recent time).
  • Select the Share with all users in my account checkbox to allow other users to access to your chart. Otherwise, leave it as is.

You can share your chart or dashboard with different access permissions:

  1. Users can view only
  2. Users can view and edit

The table below lists the user roles and corresponding permissions*.

The corresponding permissions are displayed below:

  • View - open and view a chart or dashboard.
  • Interact - work with the chart or dashboard using available tools (left rail menu,  radial menu, axes labels, and so on).
  • Rename - change the name of the chart or a dashboard. Also, it allows to change the name of each chart separately on a shared dashboard.
  • Overwrite - save the applied the changes.
  • Save as a copy - save the copy of a dashboard with the applied changes.
  • Delete - delete a dashboard from Favorites or delete a chart from the dashboard.

To view your saved dashboards, you can either navigate back to the Home page, or click the Menu icon to display a list of all the dashboards in your account.

Share Charts and Dashboards

You can also share your charts and dashboards.

There are two ways you can share your charts and dashboards:

  • Share the link
  • Embed the code in your website

If you are sharing a link, you can require the recipient to log into Zoomdata first before they can access the chart. To do this, you would delete the 'key' portion of the URL link (as shown in Figure 6).

When sharing, you can choose whether the chart or dashboard be interactive or non-interactive (Figure 5). The interactive option lets viewers manipulate your chart (as shown in the animation below):

If choosing the non-interactive option, viewers receive a static snapshot of your chart or dashboard (as shown in the figure below):

Before you can share a chart or dashboard, you must save it.
