Configuring Map Chart Styles

Map chart styles include Map Markers, Maps: US Regions, and Maps: World Countries. These chart styles are supported by most data sources. You can configure the defaults for all bar chart styles at the level of your data sources. To configure your charts, see the following:

To configure the Map Markers chart settings

To build this chart, your data source must contain the latitude and longitude fields. Zoomdata supports a variety of tile providers which offer an overlay design for the map visualization styles available in the program. These include: OpenStreetMap, OpenMapSurfer, MapQuest, CloudMade, and MapBox. MapQuest, CloudMade and MapBox require an API key.

  1. Navigate to the data source of your choice.
  2. Select the Charts tab
  3. Select the Map Markers chart style.
  4. Set the Latitude and Longitude fields to the corresponding columns in your data set.
  5. Configure the remainder of the settings as follows:
    • Lat/Long Limit - specify the maximal number of markers to be displayed on the map.
    • Start Zoom - set the level from which you can start zoom and view markers for the region.
    • Max Zoom - set the maximal level to which you can zoom and view the markers.
    • Select a tile provider. By default, the MapQuest is selected. For MapQuest, MapBox, and CloudMade tile providers, specify the Tile Provider API Key.
  6. Specify a chart name and a description, if desired.
  7. Select Save to make your changes.

To configure the Maps: US Regions chart settings

This chart can use up to three attributes: State Name, County, and ZIP Code, and one metric. Your dataset must at least include the 'State' attribute to visualize results:

  • The 'State' name must be spelled out with the first letter capitalized. For example, 'California' is the accepted format, not 'CA'.
  • This spreadsheet contains the correct format for the 50 states as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
  • Zip codes can also be used to display results at the zip code level.

Zoomdata supports a variety of tile providers which offer an overlay design for the map chart styles available in the program. These include: OpenStreetMap, CloudMade, and MapBox. OpenStreetMap can be used without an API key. MapQuest, CloudMade, and MapBox require an API key.

  1. Navigate to the data source of your choice.
  2. Select the Charts tab
  3. Select the Maps: US Regions chart style.
  4. To ensure that the map visualizes your dataset, set the State field to the State column in your dataset. Also remember to edit the 'State Limit' field to greater than 50 in order to visualize data from U.S. territories.

You can also configure the following settings:

    • The attribute or metric that is used to light up the map along with the colors to be used.
    • The limit (or maximum number of data points that is visualized depending on the zoom level; for example, at the highest zoom level where you see the entire continental US, the limit is the number of states that will show results).
    • County and/or Zip Code information (if your dataset contains those fields). If you want your charts to be able to zoom in to the level of County and Zip Code, then you must provide this information.
    • Select a tile provider. By default, the MapQuest is selected. For MapQuest, MapBox, and CloudMade tile providers, specify the Tile Provider API Key.
  5. Add a chart name and a description, if desired.
  6. Select Save to make your changes.
