Modern BI Producers and Consumers of Analytics

In this video, you’ll learn how the producer and consumer personas have changed in modern BI consumption and exploratory models.

In modern BI’s consumption model, interactivity is demanded by modern BI consumers. Static PDFs will not cut it. And data freshness is critical for making fast, well-informed decisions. Producers in the consumption model are data explorers. They focus on data freshness, data accuracy, and the ability to ask the right questions of their data, and even the ability to combine data from multiple places on-the-fly. In a modern exploratory model, the line between producers and consumers is more blurry. There are simply explorers and advanced explorers.

I'm Anurag Tandon, VP of Product Management at Zoomdata.  I've spent about 18 years in the BI and analytics space.  I’m here to talk about BI personalities in the modern BI age.

Modern Analytics Consumers Are Comfortable with Data

So, looking at modern BI personalities now, if we think about the consumption model, you have consumers now who are very savvy with interactions and being highly connected in the modern BI world. You know, having access to an online application is no longer an issue wherever you are. And so, you know, it's much more acceptable to have information right in front of your eyes on your screen as opposed to having it printed or sent to you in a PDF format.

Interactivity More Valuable than Perfection

There's also a much more acceptance as well as actually an expectation of touch, swipe, pinch and zoom type of features, interactions that consumers in the modern BI world are really expecting out of their applications. And so for them, it's less important to have the reports being presented to them in the absolute critical print perfect type of fashion. It's much more acceptable for them to actually play with the data that is being presented to them and then work with it to find the insights that they're looking for.

Data: The Fresher the Better

So, for these consumers, not only the interaction is important to them. In fact, they are able to move things around on their dashboards and then create their own, but they're also looking for the freshest amount of data that is available so that they can make up to the minute decisions with the precious data, whether that's real time applications, whether that is even historical applications, but are updated very, very frequently.

Ease of Use and Performance

So, in terms of application necessities, if you think about ease of use, if you think about the real-time nature of the application, think about performance, think about just ease of accessibility of the data or the formats in which the data is, available, those are not just platitudes any more that application developers can--or vendors can say we claim that we have it. It's actually necessities that consumers in the modern BI world are going to demand off of their applications.
