Big Data Adoption: Part 2

Big Data Adoption: Part 2 with Howard Dresner

This video reveals the numbers behind the trends in big data adoption.

Forty-one percent of survey respondents reported using big data, which was double the number from 2015. And fewer companies were reporting no plans to use it. Early adopters are finding practical and achievable projects for their big data ambitions. For example, 45 percent of surveyed financial services firms reported use. Technology companies were also active early adopters. Even for late adopters like education, maturing big data technologies have increased the intention to adopt. And this trend holds across companies of all sizes.

Transcript

Over the two years of our comprehensive big data analytics study, we've seen a tremendous uptick in the adoption and far fewer holdouts than in previous years.

Adoption of Big Data

Forty-one percent of the respondents reporting current big data use, it's greater than a two-fold increase over 2015, and at the same time, the number of respondents with no plans fell by a factor of greater than two from 36 percent to 14 percent.  And the percentage of ambivalent users was consistent year-over-year at 45 percent or a bit more.

Emerging Achievable Projects for Early Adopters

And we chalk this up to the emerging mix of practical and achievable projects, service enablement and a greater understanding of big data uses.

When we look at this from a vertical industry perspective, telecommunications with possibly the greatest data transaction volume issues of any industry, is the most likely industry to currently use big data analytics after technology.

Financial services, another high transaction industry, reports 45 percent current use. From a vertical industry perspective, after technology, telecommunications with possibly the greatest data transaction volume issues of any industry, was the next most likely industry to use big data analytics at 50 percent.  Financial services, another high data transaction industry, reported 45 percent current use.

So, those organizations or those industries tend to be early adopters.  They have pressing problems.  And historically, they would have invented the technology themselves.  But, because big data analytics and the underlying technologies have matured to the point where they can be used, they're transitioning to these mainstream technologies versus their home grown technologies.

Intent versus Adoption

Other industries like education and healthcare tend to be late adopters, and that's why you see high intent but less adoption. When we look at the statistics from an organization size perspective, we can see that adoption is much more of a large enterprise phenomenon.

So, there's still intent.  If you look at the chart here, you can see that many small organizations believe they will use big data in the future and really only very few have no plans whatsoever. When we look at those organizations that currently are not using big data and we ask them when they anticipate using big data, we see a real sea change from 2015 where organizations are much more less likely to delay implementation or adoption of big data than in previous years.

So, looking at the chart, you can see a big decrease in those that say that they will adopt beyond next year and a significant increase in those that say that they will adopt in the next year. And just to the left of that, those that say that they will adopt in the next year has increased. So, in essence, what's happening is many more organizations are adopting today, and those that are planning to adopt in the future are going to do so much sooner than we would have seen in previous years.
