With any new technology, there are risks. The cloud is no exception. Early on, people were concerned about the security of their data in the cloud. Were cloud providers seriously investing in data security? Because when you put data in the cloud, you’re giving up some control. But when the C2S contract was awarded to Amazon, it when a long way toward putting a stamp of approval on cloud security. After all if cloud security is good enough for the CIA, it should be good enough for businesses in the private sector.
Early Misgivings About Cloud Data Security
With any new technology, there's risks. And a couple of years ago, as the cloud was evolving, people were concerned about the security of their data. Are they--is someone gonna break in and snatch the data, are these cloud providers really truly investing in security to maintain the data that I put in there because once you put it up in the cloud, you're kind of losing custody of the data. No longer is it on premise behind your firewall. It's now sitting up in the cloud, and it could be at risk.
A Big Milestone in Establishing Cloud Data Security
I think there's one huge milestone event that happened a couple of years ago that caused industry to realize that the cloud can be secure, and that's with the C2S contract that was awarded to AWS. The C2S contract allowed the cloud provider AWS to sell compute services to the CIA, and this sends a message to the industry that the CIA has now said it is acceptable for us to put our most secure data in the world into the cloud and take advantage of the benefits that the cloud has to provide. That is very telling to the industry that the cloud now has become a secure location to store your data.
